  • Southern Miss is home to the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) – the nation’s leader in sports security management research and solutions.

  • In 2016, Southern Miss coastal operations thrived with the addition of the research vessel R/V Jim Franks, approval of new bachelor's degree programs in computer engineering and ocean engineering, and ongoing construction of a new Marine Education Center in Ocean Springs and a new Gulf Park Business and Health Building in Long Beach.

 

  • The Southern Miss Gulf Park campus is the only beachfront campus in the state.

 

  • There are currently more than 800 courses offered at the Gulf Park campus and other teaching and research sites on the Gulf Coast (more than 600 at Gulf Park alone).

  • Because of the continued generosity of donors, the USM Foundation provides direct support to our students, faculty and staff. During fiscal-year 2016, the USM Foundation provided $9.6 million in support to the University including 2,229 scholarships for Southern Miss students, totaling approximately $3.7 million. Southern Miss faculty and staff continue to show steadfast support for the University with their personal contributions. 45 percent of benefit-eligible employees made gifts through the USM Foundation in support of the area of the University they hold dearest.

 

  • Former Southern Miss student-athletes continued to excel on the national and world stages in 2016. Among other accomplishments, Brian Dozier of Major League Baseball's Minnesota Twins set an American League record for home runs by a second baseman; Brett Favre became the second Golden Eagle inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; and Tori Bowie won three medals on the track in the Rio Olympic Games, highlighted by a Gold Medal in the 4 x 100-meter relay.
