  • Southern Miss is home to a diverse student body representing 72 countries, all 50 states, and every county in Mississippi. 

  • With the world as our classroom, Southern Miss offers approximately 30 study-abroad programs in 20 countries, such as Japan, Spain, France and the United Kingdom.

  • Because of the continued generosity of donors, the USM Foundation provides direct support to our students, faculty and staff. During fiscal year 2017, the USM Foundation provided $8.9 million in support to the University including 2,133 scholarships for Southern Miss students, totaling approximately $3.9 million.

  • Southern Miss offers the state's only Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering, one of only 10 programs in the nation.

  • The University of Southern Mississippi has been recognized for its commitment to providing educational services for student-veterans and their families with a spot in Military Times’ prestigious 2018 “Best for Vets” college rankings. Of the 140 four-year institutions that earned recognition, Southern Miss ranked No. 17. 

  • Southern Miss has partnered with Boeing to lead research and development on next-generation composite materials to make aircraft lighter and safer.

  • Southern Miss students have earned 21 Goldwater Scholarships, the most of any Mississippi institution. Scholarships are awarded to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering. 

  • In 2017 rankings by BestColleges.com, Southern Miss ranked as the top public university in the state for online education and the second best four-year public university in the state overall. 

  • Two University of Southern Mississippi nursing programs are ranked as the best in Mississippi by U.S. News & World Report. The Master of Science in Nursing and the Doctor of Nursing Practice were the top programs in the state based on factors such as research activity, student-faculty ratio, faculty credentials and number of faculty active in nursing practice. 

  • Our undergraduate elementary teacher preparation program is ranked in the top 3 percent in the nation according to the National Council on Teacher Quality. 

  • The Southern Miss Gulf Park campus is the only beachfront campus in the state.

  • The College of Business and School of Accountancy are AACSB-accredited, placing USM among less than 1% of universities worldwide who earned both accreditations. 

  • Southern Miss is the only university in Mississippi to offer a Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) program. 

  • The Southern Miss College of Nursing has the first and only Nurse Anesthesia Program in the state. 

  • Southern Miss is home to the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) – the nation’s leader in sports security management research and solutions. 

  • The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus offers the only film studies pathway offered at a public institution in the state. Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts in entertainment industry with an emphasis in film. 

  • The University of Southern Mississippi is home to the first and only certification program in Unmanned Maritime Systems. 

  • The Dale Center for the Study of War and Society at Southern Miss has hosted accomplished speakers such as Former U.S. Secretary of Defense and CIA Director, Dr. Robert M. Gates and Former CIA Director and Commander of U.S. Central Command, General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, Ret.).
