Steven R. Moser, Ph.D.

Dr. Steven Moser, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic AffairsDr. Steven Moser began serving Dec. 1, 2015, as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

He most recently served as interim provost and served as Dean of our College of Arts and Letters from 2012 to 2015.  Dr. Moser holds an academic appointment in the School of Music as Professor and has nearly 30 years of experience in various teaching and administrative positions at The University of Southern Mississippi and Texas Christian University.

He came to the University in 1990 as director of the Pride of Mississippi and a Music Education professor specializing in instrumental conducting. During his career he has conducted wind ensembles and bands throughout the United States and remains active as an adjudicator. His ensembles have performed before national and international audiences.  

Dr. Moser earned his Ph.D. from The University of Southern Mississippi, an M.M.E. from Texas Christian University, and a B.M. from the University of Mississippi. He is a 2007 fellow of the Management Development Program in the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University and a 2013 Aspen Institute Wye fellow.

What is a provost?

The provost is the chief academic officer and the senior university officer next to the president.

The provost is the president's principal adviser in all matters pertaining to the development of a well-conceived and organized curriculum, administered and taught by a faculty of the highest qualifications.

The provost oversees planning for the university's educational programs and works with the vice presidents and deans in accomplishing the university's educational objectives. The provost oversees budget development by the colleges and monitors these budgets throughout the academic year.
