Doing a Thesis

Did you know that you have the option of completing a senior thesis even if you are not enrolled in the Honors College? If you have an overall GPA of 3.00 and a GPA of 3.25 in your major you can do a departmental senior thesis.

Why should you do a senior thesis if you are not required to do so? Doing a senior thesis will help you build the research and writing skills that will make you more competitive when applying to graduate schools or in your future non-academic career.

What is involved in doing a departmental senior thesis? Under the close supervision of a faculty member, you will

  1. complete an original research project and
  2. pass a comprehensive exam.
  3. You will also be encouraged to present your work in appropriate scholarly settings.

See the Guide to Anthropology and Sociology Senior Thesis (pdf) for more information.

Latin Honors: Depending on your GPA, you may also be eligible to graduate with Latin Honors Designation (e.g. summa cum laude). See the Application (pdf) for a Degree with Latin Honors Designation for more information.
