Into to Public Relations. This course gives much more insight into the PR field and what being a Public Relations Practitioner means.

Favorite Course Outside my Major

Spanish. I took my first foreign language course at USM the second semester of my freshman year, and I fell in love with it so much I declared it to be my minor.

My Career Goals

I am planning to do a few internships before I graduate to really get my feet wet in terms of real-world experience. I am not sure where, but I will intern at Public Relations Firm to see if that area is something I want to continue pursuing.

Favorite Course in My Major

Latin American History with Dr. Casey: The class was well organized and the material was always super interesting the way that Dr. Casey taught it. It was the first upper level History course that I took, and I couldn't have made a better choice.

Majors: Anthropology and International Studies

Randa Craft

Favorite Course in My Major

I adore German because not only does the thought of learning a new language excite me, but also my professor, Dr. William Odom, is a charismatic, engaging, passionate individual. He helped me only strengthen my desire to use this second language in ways that I could help those that seek my guidance. Learning German also opens windows for future languages I aspire to learn (Arabic, French, etc.), as well as the opportunity to grasp wisdom and life experience from those whose first language is not my own. There is so much to learn from the world and I will not let language be a barrier.

Favorite Course Outside my Major

I am incredibly pleased to have been a student of Amy Slagel. She seemed to embody the passion I possessed to study diverse cultures and religions, ultimately finding commonalities between them. Comparative Religion strengthened my desire to understand the major religions of the world in hopes of broadcasting our similarities and differences one day.

My Career Goals

I wish to further my education in anthropology and international studies, in hopes of obtaining a master's degree or higher to gain an experienced role in international developmental anthropology.

Other Activities I'm Involved In

Southern Style, Arts and Letters Ambassadors, and Gay Straight Alliance.

Words of Wisdom from Previous Ambassadors

Why Did YOU Choose Southern Miss?

"Southern is not so big that you get lost in the crowd, but not so small that you feel like everyone knows everyone, and we also have excellent academic programs (especially in the liberal arts), a very important consideration for me." – J.D. Rimann, Round Rock, TX (History, English, and Political Science)
"My favorite thing about USM is the diversity of our campus and the constant opportunities for me to make a difference." – Daniel Fontenette, New Orleans, LA (Communication Studies)
"I fell in love with the family feel that students, faculty, and staff exhibit. USM has every aspect that someone could look for: high academic programs, interactive student life, endless opportunities, and so much more. You cannot possibly miss the Southern Miss spirit and the pride that is an innate part of everyone who comes on campus." – Lakelyn Taylor, Long Beach, MS (Communication Studies and Spanish)
"My classes are small, my professors are personable, and connecting and networking is incredibly easy on this campus! I grew up in a very small town, but transitioning to Hattiesburg was absolutely no problem. There is so much to do both on campus and around Hattiesburg, and Southern Miss is in the perfect college town!" – Brooke Boisseau, Pontotoc, MS (International Studies and French)

How Did You Pick Your Major?

Sierra Howard"One of the vital reasons I chose my major was the faculty. Individually, they show their passion and dedication to our success which has created a team that has showed my classmates and me the true meaning of teamwork. They have also created a family aspect within our community. I enjoy how close my peers and I have become over the past four years and our abilities to work together." – Sierra Howard, Knoxville, TN (Dance Performance and Choreography)
Amy Myers"History has always been one of my favorite subjects. Reading and transporting myself into the events of the past is exhilarating. I wanted to be able to share that excitement with my students and studying to become a teacher will not only help me to educate students but to encourage them, also. What I like most about my major is the number of courses available. From Ancient Greece to the Old South, I never find myself bored." – Amy Myers, Carson, MS (History—Social Studies Licensure)
Madaleine Meeks"I knew I wanted to go into medicine when I entered college. Instead of majoring in a science field, I decided to major in two fields I loved and knew I would enjoy doing. I also knew that speaking a second language and being able to write proficiently would really help me as a physician. I love Spanish and journalism because they're very versatile fields and have provided me with countless opportunities to meet wonderful people and travel to incredible places." – Madaleine Meeks, Saucier, MS (Spanish and News Editorial Journalism)
Ashley Felder "I knew when I graduated high school that I wanted to be an English teacher. This played a large role in my choice of university, since USM has a top rated program for teachers. Once I got into my classes, I only fell in love with my major more deeply. I've gotten to take some incredible English classes with the most amazing professors!" – Ashley Felder, Liberty, MS (English Licensure)

Any Advice for New Students?

Alexis Jones"Don't sit on your dreams, get up, get out there and just do it! Always help others and be a part of community service. Never look down or feel like you are alone, for you have a whole campus to explore and professors who will always help and take care of you as if you were their own child. And always remember where you came from and who you are. You can do this, now it is time to prove it! Good Luck! #SMTTT" – Alexis Jones, Vicksburg, MS (Public Relations)
Emma Reeves"College is about more than just classes. Take risks! Experience something amazing. Remember to learn about yourself and the world while making memories; don't forget these crucial aspects in the midst of all the work. – Emma Reeves, Meridian, MS (English Licensure)
Chase Bahr"GO TO CLASS! I know from experience that just going to class and listening to lecture makes a huge difference when it comes to grades." – Chase Bahr, Mobile, AL (Sociology)
Samantha Russell"My college tip is a quote by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright: "You have to go wholeheartedly into anything in order to achieve anything worth having." – Samantha Russell, McComb, MS (Dance Performance and Choreography)
