WUSM-Southern Miss Radio  



The campus radio station regularly promotes upcoming events on and off campus. Basically, they read down a list of what/where/when/cost for the week. It’s mostly music events, but it never hurts to send academic events that are open to the public. They may plug that information somewhere else. 


Student Printz

Student PrintzTARGET AUDIENCE – students, faculty, staff


The student newspaper may choose to cover your event, depending on what kind of news week they are having, but again…notice is key. They publish every Monday and Thursday morning and online daily.



USM Mailout/Info Center

USM MailoutTARGET AUDIENCE – Faculty/Staff on Wednesdays; Students on Thursdays; Entire community on Friday

CONTACT - Log into the Info/Center with your emplid and password; "submit new announcement"

Tell folks what you’re hosting, where, when and who’s hosting it. Include “free” or “ticketed” and any other pertinent info. There is a 250 word limit on posts, and you'll need to get the announcement in by 10:00 a.m. on the day you'd like it to be sent out. If you need to make a change to an announcement you have already submitted, please email LaTonya Frelix.


USM Marquee

University Communications manages the marquee and limits the content to mostly ticketed or high profile events.



USM Calendar

USM CalendarTARGET AUDIENCE – campus community and community at-large

CONTACT INFO - Accessed by those who have Drupal privileges (department admins, chairs or other designated personnel)

This is the official calendar of the University and anything open to the public should be included here. You can put events on the university calendar by logging into Drupal and clicking the Create Event link. View this brief tutorial video for more information.



Community Calendar - VisitHattiesburg

Visit HattiesburgTARGET AUDIENCE – general public, tourists


This calendar is recommended for mostly art events and other high profile events. There are actually many community calendars out there, so pick and choose which ones you want to use. Adding content to community calendars can be quite time-consuming and it’s difficult to know if your target audience uses the calendars you use. This particular calendar is well-known and has been utilized for a little over a year now.

If your event is unique from others you’ve coordinated or you want to document the event for historical or publicity purposes, consider contacting Kelly in Photo Services. There is a cost and she can give you that information when you reach out to her. It is recommended that you contact her at least two weeks in advance, as she is the only University photographer at the moment and is quite busy. Her work is professional and can be used for almost anything you plan to do. (NOTE: do not assume that she knows every event that is going on and has plans to attend and take photos; she must be contacted.)

UC has two writers who develop and write news releases and distribute them to the media outlets. Because they are writing releases for the entire University (all colleges and other entities within Southern Miss), please give them as much lead time as possible.
