Anglophile: History and Culture in the British Isles

This course surveys those aspects of British history and culture that most intrigue “Anglophiles.” We will take afternoon tea, explore great estates, battlefields and castles, tour the BBC, experience Shakespearean theatre, and examine the influence of cultural figures from Jane Austen to the Beatles. Through visits to historical sites in Oxford, Bath, Greenwich, and all over London, we will consider what it has meant to be British across time and place, with a particular focus on the Monarchy, the Victorians, the British Empire, and the World Wars.
