Christopher Winn wrote  . . . . . . . . . . . London is whatever you want it to be.

It is one of the greatest cities on earth. It stands on the Prime Meridian and draws in the best from East and West. It sits at the Centre of Time and the world sets its watch by London's Big Ben.

London is built on commerce and trades with the world. It gave the world modern banking, the stock exchange and insurance and it remains the world's financial hub. London is home to the Mother of Parliaments and has given sanctuary to ideas, to freedom of speech and thought, to religions and refugees from across the globe. London has the best theatre, the greatest concentration of museums, opera and art; a musical and literary heritage second to none. London has the first underwater tunnels, the first and biggest underground transport system, the first international exchange, the highest Ferris wheel, the biggest dome, the loftiest church. London has over 2,000 years of history. It has survived pestilence, fire and war. It has Roman walls, Norman towers, Tudor palaces, Renaissance splendor, Georgian loveliness, Victorian grandeur, breath-taking modern wonders.

There is pomp and ceremony and spectacle, and yet London is also intimate with quiet corners, crooked cobbled streets, winding alleyways and sunny squares. It is the most livable-in of all cities with more green spaces than any comparable metropolis, and gardens everywhere. London is its people and its characters who meet here from every corner of the planet. London cannot be tamed. All you can do is revel in its richness and enjoy the adventure.

To that end, the Sport Management program offers a study abroad opportunity for ALL students involving the Business of Sport in the UK.

Global Sport Business in the UK

Six (6) semester Undergraduate or Graduate hours to study one month in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Dennis Phillips, The University of Southern Mississippi

The growing global sport industry requires that the future sport management professional keep abreast of new and proven managerial techniques in sport.  Major sport events present a series of immensely complex planning, management, operational, logistical, and technological challenges to the individuals, agencies and authorities responsible for their management.  Athletes, officials, spectators, and the media demand excellence in facilities and organization in every aspect of an event - from transportation and timing, to catering and in-stadium facilities, to marketing and promotions, media management, finance, and security and fan/player safety.

In order to better understand the unique characteristics of management within the realm of international sport and culture; physical education, recreation, coaching, sport management, and business administration students will explore the facility development and planning that went into the successful staging of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.  They will tour some of the newest and most modern sport stadia in the world, as well as some of the most historical and storied venues of athletic competition.  Students will visit sport governing agency headquarters, interact with international sport leaders, discuss current trends and issues in amateur and professional sport, view international sporting events, tour sport halls of fame and museums, conduct survey research at events, and hear presentations from sport finance, marketing, facility, security, political, media, and socio-ethical experts in the sport industry.

Course activities will combine a series of lectures, readings, case studies, field excursions, and practical research in a variety of sport settings.  Students will visit a number of well-known venues such as Wembley Stadium, Wimbledon, Minister of Sport at Parliament, English Olympic Training Centers, and major sites of the 2012 London Olympic Games.  In addition, visits to lesser known organizations and facilities such as Lord's Cricket Grounds, Twickenham Rugby Stadium, Major League Baseball Europe/Africa, NFL International, SkySports, and several Premier League Pro Soccer Clubs (including Manchester United – the most valued sport club in the world!) & FA Security personnel, will give the students an enlarged view of international sport

Finally, a London-Away educational experience will await the students as their horizons expand to Scotland with visits to SportScotland and St. Andrews - the home of Golf, as well as the world’s largest indoor climbing center, and the second oldest Scottish Highland Games.  Students will stay in Edinburgh!
