HOW IT WORKS

Through the CEEEd Fund, you can get:

  • Money to launch a new business idea
  • Mentorship to help your business succeed

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

You could be eligible if you:

  • Currently attend The University of Southern Mississippi
  • Are returning to The University of Southern Mississippi in the Fall semester of 2018 (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 (with a minimum 2.0 during the most recently completed semester)
  • Are over the age of 18 (if under 18, a parent or guardian must provide written approval)
  • Are a U.S. citizen

 

AWARD AMOUNT

  • Maximum award: $2,000
  • Successful applicants receive:
    • $500 upfront to help with your start-up costs
    • Up to an additional $1,500 to take your ideas to the next level

 

WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS

You can choose to start almost any type of business, as long as it:

  • Is owned and operated by the applicant(s)
  • Is an independent business venture (not a part of an existing or family business)
  • Directly benefits the Southern Miss community (current students, faculty, or staff)
  • Is in compliance with all local, state, and federal government regulations for operating a business
  • Does not compete with existing University services (e.g., no food services)

 

HOW TO APPLY

The submission period for Spring 2018 is open from February 1 to March 9.

 

Here are the steps to apply:

  1. Make sure that you’re eligible
  2. Create a 1-minute video1 and upload it (e.g., YouTube, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive)
  3. This video should describe:
    1. Your idea2
    2. How it addresses a need on campus
    3. How you will know whether or not your idea has been successful
  4. COMPLETE THE ONLINE APPLICATION (you will be asked to include a link to your video)
  5. Submit your application

 

TIMELINE

  • Feb 1, 2018 (Thursday) – Competition begins
  • Mar 9, 2018 (Friday) – Submission deadline
  • Mar 23, 2018 (Friday) – Top 10 finalists identified by University judges
  • Mar 30, 2018 (Friday) – Online voting opens / finalists begin to schedule appointments with Southern Miss Small Business Development Center (SBDC)
  • Apr 6, 2018 (Friday) – Online voting closes
  • Apr 9, 2018 (Tuesday) – Top 5 finalists announced
  • 3-4 Weeks later –  Funds disbursed (additional funds above $500 dependent on and determined by initial coaching session with SBDC)

 

AFTER YOU'VE BEEN SELECTED FOR FUNDING

You will need to:

  • Attend an orientation meeting with the Center for Economic and Entrepreneurship Education (CEEE)
  • Provide proof of eligibility (University ID, unofficial transcript)
  • Provide necessary W-9 tax form
  • Participate in a minimum of 2 business coaching sessions with Southern Miss Small Business Development Center (SBDC)
  • Submit a progress report by Friday, June 15, 2018
