Hattiesburg Undergraduate Academic Services

The Academic Services Office in the College of Business & Economic Development handles issues related to academics, including academic advising regarding course selections and the path to graduation, probation/suspension counseling, and other concerns affecting enrollment in business courses.  Academic advisors also give referrals for social, financial, and career counseling needs.

All students are required to meet with their academic advisor each semester to discuss course selections for the next term.  Advisors are happy to teach students how to track and monitor progress toward degrees, as well as how to provide parents access to their SOAR accounts via the Parent Portal (PDF).

ADVISING APPOINTMENTS

Hattiesburg business students participate in group or self-advising.

Self-Advising

Are you in Good Academic Standing? Is your GPA a 3.25 or above? Are you comfortable with planning your schedule? Have you gone through a group advising session at least once (not including orientation)?  Are you at least two semesters away from graduation? If you answered yes to all of these questions, then you may complete the self-advisement form.

Please note if you choose to self-advise, you are responsible for making your schedule. If you want your schedule to be checked, or have questions about making your schedule, please make a group advisement appointment.

Group Advising

Group advising is more of a round-table teaching session where the professional advising staff teaches students how to properly plan and forecast their progression toward graduation. In addition to confirming course selections for the next semester, students will learn about student success strategies, important events and deadlines, and any policy changes.

AT THE TIME YOU MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT, YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS COMPLETED AND READY TO TURN IN:

  • Printed Degree Progress Report (printed within the last month)
  • Completed Semester-by-Semester Guide for your specific major and catalog year, which can be found here. For instructions on how to complete your Semester-by-Semester Guide, click here
  • Completed Proposed Schedule Sheet with a full schedule and nine hours of alternates, which can be found here.

With three group sessions offered four times per week, we have a wide range of time slots and days to accommodate every schedule. Students should be diligent to sign up early and not wait until the last minute. No students should miss class because of any group advising sessions. All group sessions begin promptly at their scheduled time. Latecomers will be required to reschedule their appointment.

AFTER you have attended group, you are encouraged to make private appointments with your advisor for more private matters or complicated situations.

PROBATION, PROBATION CONTINUED, SUSPENSION, AND GPA BELOW 2.0

Anyone with an academic standing other than "Good," or with a GPA below 2.0 must schedule a follow-up advising appointment with his or her advisor (listed in SOAR) AFTER he or she has attended a group advising session.  The follow-up appointment is needed to take care of academic contracts and other remediation as necessary. For more information on Academic Standing, please click here

GRADUATING?

Students who are graduating in the current or upcoming semester must make an individual degree application appointment with your advisor (listed in SOAR). These appointments are made at the main Undergraduate Academic Services Desk in Scianna Hall room 2035.  Graduating students must first print their graduation application in order to make a graduation appointment.

WALK-IN WEDNESDAYS

All advisors will use WEDNESDAYS as their walk-in day.  On this day, students may ask general questions regarding their academics, but they cannot be seen for a full advising session.  In order to best serve students for upcoming semester advisement, they will need to make an appointment for one of our group advising sessions located in Scianna Hall, 2035.
