“AmeriCorps changed my entire perspective on my future career.  When I was in college, I had no intention of becoming a teacher.  After being a tutor with Campus Link AmeriCorps, my entire outlook changed.  During my first year of service I worked with 5th grade English students at Hawkins Elementary School. I could not have asked for a better group of students to work with, as well as their teacher, Mrs. Griffin.  This particular group found a way to make every day entertaining and fun.  The students were always eager to greet me when I arrived and settled in to learn along with them the materials Mrs. Griffin taught each day.  In addition to working with the entire classroom, Mrs. Griffin would choose students who needed to be pulled aside for one-on-one tutoring sessions with me.  I worked with them individually on assignments both during and after school.  I loved working with them and it was very rewarding to see their progress throughout the school year.  Initially, some of the students were reading below a 5th grade level.  After weeks of individual tutoring sessions, they were able to read and comprehend at the correct reading level.  The students started to show a genuine love for reading and they appreciated the time I spent working with them.  My English class often competed with another AmeriCorps member’s class and the kids would have a blast learning.  After my first year, I decided to continue with the program for a second term.  At this point, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher and work with students for the rest of my life to help them succeed.  Once I graduated from USM, I completed the alternate route program at William Carey and received my certification to teach Elementary Education (4-6) and English (7-12).  I’m currently a 7th grade English teacher and basketball coach.  If it wasn’t for AmeriCorps, I don’t think I would have found a career that I actually enjoy every single day.  I loved being a part of the Campus Link AmeriCorps program because of the friends I made and the lives I was able to positively impact.  It’s an experience I recommend others to try.  It’s amazing and humbling how much a child will appreciate even the smallest amount of special attention and encouragement.” – Timothy Johnson, Campus Link AmeriCorps Alumni
