Commencement Volunteers

Fall Commencement Volunteers Needed

Commencement is fast approaching, and the excitement is growing particularly with the students and their families. We want the University community to celebrate this special event with the graduates and their guests. Please volunteer to take part in Commencement setup on December 7 AND/OR festivities on December 8, which will take place during two ceremonies, 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg. The graduating class consists of approximately 1,400 students, and we anticipate another 8,000 guests on campus throughout the day.

Regardless of your availability to serve as a volunteer, we request that all members of the University Community dress in black and gold on commencement day in support of our graduates.

Please see below a description of what the volunteer opportunities involve:

1. Thursday, December 7, - Prep Volunteer

  • Lots of prep work takes place in order to have a successful Commencement event. Some of the prep work involves setting up chairs, placing signs around campus, picking up last minute items needed, etc.  Those of you who may not be able to volunteer on Friday, may be able to assist on Thursday for an hour or so which is just as important as the commencement event.

2. Friday, December 8 - Commencement Volunteer

  • We need the majority of our volunteers for 1.5-hour shifts in the following areas:
    • Greet and give directional help to graduates and their guests from commencement parking areas to Reed Green Coliseum.
    • Transport those attending ceremony via golf carts to/from parking lots to the coliseum. Golf cart training is required for liability purposes, and volunteers must hold and present a valid drivers license before beginning volunteer shift.
    • Take pictures at photo locations around campus (using the guests’ cameras/phones – you do not have to be a professional photographer!)
    • Serve at one of the information booths around the Payne Center providing directional help.
    • End of the day pack up commencement items.

If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please sign up for your spot by Friday, December 1, via this Commencement sign-up link. Please confirm your availability with your supervisor as this would be during normal working hours.

Volunteer training for everyone will be available on Thursday, December 7, at 3 p.m. in the Payne Center gym floor (North end) to help acquaint you with the day’s activities. While training is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged. Golf cart training will begin in the Payne Center gym immediately afterwards around 3:45 pm.
