Licensure is typically obtained by passing a certification exam and graduating from an accredited program.  States typically require graduates of programs to become licensed within five years or to hold a certain amount of experience, which must have been obtained through employment rather than as part of training completed as part of a degree program.  Other states may use certifications as a means of determining pay grades or salary ranges for technicians.
