Mike Madson

What is Your Background in Psychology?

I am a Professor in the Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Southern Mississippi. I earned my Ph.D. from Marquette University and joined the Southern Miss faculty in 2005.

Describe Your Current Research Program

My research focuses on two areas: social-cognitive and mental health predictors of safe and harmful substance use by college students and motivational interviewing training. Specifically, we have explored social-cognitive variables such as gender norms, alcohol use expectancies and motives and mental health factors including depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress as predictors of harmful and safe alcohol use. Students working with me focus on college student substance use for their research (theses & dissertations). Opportunities to assist my motivational interviewing research may be available depending on student goals and progress. Students do not conduct motivational interviewing for their independent research.
