THE INSTITUTE FOR DISABILITY STUDIES ENHANCES THE EDUCATION, INDEPENDENCE AND QUALITY OF LIFE OF THOSE WITH DISABILITIES.

Located at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park Campus, The Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) provides resources to persons with disabilities, their families, teachers, caregivers andeducation professionals through:

Lending Library

The Institute for Disability Study's Lending Library offers a wide variety of assistive technology devices and recreational equipment available for loan.

The borrowing period for devices is up to 90 days. Knowledgeable IDS staff provide demonstrations and recommendations for equipment and devices to clients, family members and professionals.

Hands-On Learning

Professional development, training and educational opportunities are offered monthly to clients, family members and professionals. These resources are can be customized to fit individual or organization needs.

Recreational Activities

At IDS, we believe work and play are equally important to maintaining your health. Opportunities for recreation, health and relaxation are provided through adapted recreation and assistive technology equipment for persons with disabilities and their families. 

There’s something for everyone - whether you like art, pottery, fishing, playing on a playground or with toys.

Athletics

Staying active is important to your well-being. IDS is a recognized Paralympic Sports Club, providing exhibitions, Paralympic experiences and demonstrations year-round. IDS supports a wheelchair basketball and softball team and also offers the following sports: tennis, golf, kayaking and cycling.

 

Community Support

By facilitating and hosting various support groups, IDS provides opportunities to meet new people and make new friends who may have experiences similar to yours.
