Housing - Home of Your Own (HOYO) Overview

Home ownership is the American dream—and this dream is no different for people with disabilities. Since 1997, Mississippi Home of Your Own (HOYO) has assisted over 700 individuals with disabilities and their families in 66 Mississippi counties in realizing their dream of home ownership. Home of Your Own

The HOYO Disability Housing Initiative gets the non-competitive funding from Mississippi Home Corporation to offer state wide down payment assistance to eligible households with family members with a disability.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant must be a low-income Mississippi resident  purchasing their primary residence.
  • A good credit history is required and savings for home ownership is recommended.
  • An individuals income, after expenses, must be adequate to make timely monthly mortgage payments and maintain the home.
  • Only individuals with disabilities defined by the ADA or families who have members with disabilities living with them may apply.

 

Services Available

  • Information and referral
  • Pre-purchase homebuyer education and credit counseling
  • Person-centered planning (interagency collaboration), as needed
  • Research of available options for funding sources for down payments and closing costs
  • Assistance in locating appropriate mortgage, home selection, and inspectors
  • Individual counseling through the home-buying process
  • Follow-up, as needed
