HowTo - File Encryption

For HIPAA compliance purposes, if you email/store files containing client information you are required to encrypt those files.  IDS uses XTY File Encryptor.


How to install and use XTY File Encryptor

  1. For Windows XP download XtyFileCryptor to your computer. For Windows 7 download xTyFileCrypter_64bit.
  2. Double-click on the file to install the program.
  3. Right-click on any file or folder (even on your desktop)
  4. Select `xTyFileCrypter' from popup menu.
  5. Select `About xTyFileCrypter' from menu.
  6. Click `Activate' button from popup screen.
  7. Copy & Paste User ID and Registration Code sent to you by Rich
  8. Click OK button to activate

Then, to encrypt a file:

  1. Right-click on the file
  2. Select XtyFileCryptor
  3. The key Name isn’t necessary but it may help you remember which key (password) you used.XTY File Encryptor
  4. Enter the your Key.  It can be anything you and the person you’re sending the document to agree upon.
  5. Re-enter the Key to confirm.
  6. Click [OK]
  7. The file’s icon will change to look like a lightning bold and if it is in a listing, it will probably jump to the bottom of the list.  Don’t worry, you didn’t lose it.
  8. Attach the encrypted file to an email and send it as usual.
