Curriculum

The ELI curriculum is academic and intensive.  We are here to help you …

  • Perfect your English.
  • Prepare for TOEFL examinations.
  • Discover the cultures of the United States.
  • Enter an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

Levels and Classes

There are three levels in the ELI program.

  • Basic
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

ELI students study grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary, and listening/speaking.  They attend classes each day, Monday through Friday, for a total of 22 hours of instruction per week. In addition, students should expect to have regular and frequent homework assignments.

New students take the ELI Placement Test during Registration, and their scores determine their initial class level.  At the end of each term, students take Achievement Tests; test scores and class grades are combined to generate a Final Course Grade.  A grade of 75% is required for promotion to the next level.

The Institutional TOEFL is administered at the end of each term at no additional cost to currently-enrolled students in our Intermediate and Advanced Levels.  A high score on this examination may satisfy the English language proficiency requirement for undergraduate admission to Southern Miss.
