Levels and Classes
Currently, the levels of the ELI program include:
ELI students study grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary, and listening/speaking. They attend classes each day, Monday through Friday, for a total of 20 hours of instruction per week. In addition, students should expect to have regular and frequent homework assignments.
New students take the ELI Placement Test during Orientation and their scores determine their initial class level. Test scores and class grades are combined to generate a Final Course Grade. A grade of 75% is required for promotion to the next level. At the end of each term, students take a proficiency exam to measure student progress.
The iTEP, International Test of English Proficiency, is administered at the end of each term at no additional cost to currently-enrolled students in our Intermediate and Advanced Levels. A high score on this examination (4.0) will satisfy the English language proficiency requirement for admission to Southern Miss.
