Department Overview

Dancing Women in MexicoWelcome to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at The University of Southern Mississippi.  Congratulations on making languages part of your academic career!

On behalf of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and our entire faculty and staff, I invite you to take advantage of the many language resources available to you and to consider how a language specialization could enhance your career plans.  We offer the lower level sequence (101-202) in Italian, Chinese, French, Spanish, Latin, and German and you can minor in Classics, French, German, Latin, or Spanish with as few as 18 hours of study, including 100-level courses!  For a major, our flexible, 30-hour degree plans make it easy to combine Spanish, French, or German with another major, or to specialize in German or Latin with our Two-Language major. For Gulf Coast students (Gulf Coast campus) we offer courses in Spanish through the 300 level and French may be taken online at the 101-202 levels. For students considering a career in language teaching, we offer the only licensure program in the state meeting the national recognition standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. We also offer many exciting study abroad opportunities.

At the graduate level, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers the only Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages degree online and in-class in the state with emphases in French, Spanish, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

On the Hattiesburg campus, our offices are located on the third floor of the Liberal Arts Building. We invite you to visit us to discuss your future in foreign languages!
