Juan G. Loaiza

Assistant Teaching Professor of Spanish

Juan G. Loaiza currently teaches beginning and intermediate level Spanish, and coordinates the language tutoring service for undergraduate students. He is also one of the directors of the Spanish in Spain program.

Dr. Loaiza holds a B.A. in Modern Languages from Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia; a M.A. in Docencia Universitaria (Higher Education Teaching) from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana-Cali, Colombia; a Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages (MATL) from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Ph.D. in Adult Education also from Southern Miss.

Dr. Loaiza taught English as a Foreign Language, English for Academic Purposes, and Spanish for Academic Purposes in his native country of Colombia before he moved to Hattiesburg. He has been at Southern Miss since 2003.

His areas of interest include second language acquisition, self-directed learning, metacognition, self-efficacy beliefs, vocabulary learning/ teaching, language learning strategies, and materials design for language learning/ teaching. He is the author of the textbook English Book 1 - Basic Academic Reading Skills, published by the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana-Cali in 2003.
