Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages (MATL)

Program Description

World Languages at The University of Southern Mississippi offers a Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages (MATL) program with emphasis areas in French, Spanish or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). It is even possible for students to obtain a dual-emphasis degree if they qualify. This program has been in operation for over 20 years. It can be completed fully online or in class year-round. Online students are charged in-state tuition. The MATL program does not lead to initial licensure for public school teaching in the state of Mississippi.

The MATL program is one of the largest of its kind in the United States addressing language teachers' needs. It brings together language teachers and teachers-to-be from all parts of the United States and abroad and is designed particularly for the needs of elementary, middle, and high school teachers or for those who would like to teach at the community college level. Our faculty are experienced in online teaching and in using innovative technologies to reach our student audience. In the online environment we incorporate discussion boards, synchronous chats, and audio and video tools in the target language to enhance student learning.

The focus of the MATL program is on developing and enhancing the knowledge, skills, and theories in language, language acquisition, and language instruction that are essential for both effective teaching and successful learning. Our large variety of courses are aimed to meet the multifaceted needs of today's language teachers. Students may combine online courses with study abroad options in either French or Spanish to engage in an even more culturally diversified and enriching experience. Summer online courses are organized to present the greatest flexibility for students. Students may take between 3-6 hours in the summer online or abroad, depending on the site and offerings available. It is also possible for students to obtain additional hours through transfer work (6 hours total) from another accredited institution

In the MATL students share their experiences and significantly enhance their professional and academic training in an enriching and stimulating environment online or in-class. We are confident that our innovative curriculum and teaching practice have achieved the best combination between theory and classroom work. We hope you will consider learning with us!

The University of Southern Mississippi is accredited by the Southern Assocation of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
