Performance and Pedagogy Program Details

Unique Program Requirements

Each student has final responsibility to ascertain they have complied with the requirements for graduation. Students must read the ""Doctoral Degree Requirements"" section of this Bulletin and know expectations; that which follows pertains to School of Music practices and policies and it amplifies Bulletin statements.

Two doctoral degrees are available in the School of Music: the doctor of philosophy in music education, and the doctor of musical arts. A 3.0 GPA is required for graduation. Graduate students must receive a grade of B- or better in any class in order for it to count toward the graduation requirements.

Specific Admission Requirements

Acceptance: See Graduate Bulletin for full explanation.  A maximum of nine (9) hours of graduate work earned before admission is gained into the School of Music can be applied towards a degree. Other requirements:

  1. DMA in Performance: possess a master's degree and pass a candidacy audition prior to full-time residence or before completing nine (9) hours of coursework.
  2. Ph.D. in Music Education: possess a master's degree and successful teaching experience (K-12). A demonstration of successful teaching (video acceptable) is required.
  3. All doctoral students: take diagnostic entrance examinations the Thursday, Friday, or Monday before school begins.
