Graduate Faculty Appointment Criteria

Graduate faculty at The University of Southern Mississippi are experts in academic, performance, or clinical disciplines supporting the programs offered at the institution who have earned the academic credentials allowing them to teach, train, and mentor graduate students. The levels of graduate faculty status reflect the faculty member’s level of activity in research and other scholarly pursuits which may be demonstrated as peer reviewed journal articles, published creative works, invited or volunteered performances and presentations, funded research, or other relevant accomplishments.  Graduate faculty are nominated by department chairs or school directors, and membership requires review of credentials and approval by Graduate Council. 

 REGULAR GRADUATE FACULTY

A regular graduate faculty member must:

  • Be a full-time employee in a tenure-track position at The University of Southern Mississippi, holding an academic rank of assistant, associate, full, or distinguished professor without any qualifying designations such as “visiting” or “adjunct.”
  • Have completed an earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching discipline.
  • Have documented integrity assurance program training (CITI certification).
  • Have documented successful mentorship or mentorship training.
  • Have demonstrated quality performance in teaching appropriate to the individual’s department. 

Specific Requirements for Each Level 

R1:  Approved to teach and serve on master’s and specialist degree committees

  • Must document minimal research engagement. However, evidence that a programmatic line of research/scholarly activity is forthcoming is expected. 

R2:  Approved to teach and serve on master’s, specialist, and doctoral committees

  • Must demonstrate quality performance in research and/or creative activity within the past 5 years appropriate to the individual’s department. 

R3:  Approved to teach and chair master’s, specialist, and doctoral committees

  • Must demonstrate current, consistent, and active engagement in quality research and/or creative activity appropriate to the individual’s department.

ASSOCIATE GRADUATE FACULTY

An associate graduate faculty member:
  • Is typically not a full-time employee in a tenure-track position at The University of Southern Mississippi, but meets other qualifications listed below. (The individual may be employed part-time, as a visiting professor, as an adjunct, as a teaching-track faculty member, or may not be affiliated with USM),
  • Must have completed an earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching discipline.
  • Must demonstrate quality performance in teaching appropriate to the department or student(s) being served or substantial professional experience which relates directly to the graduate course content.
  • Must have documented integrity assurance program training (CITI certification).
  • Must have documented successful mentorship or mentorship training. 

Specific Requirements for Each Level

A1:  Approved to teach only

  • No additional requirements.

A2:   Approved to teach and serve on master’s and specialist degree committees

  • Must demonstrate quality performance in research, creative, or clinical activity within the past 5 years appropriate to the department or student(s) being served.  Professional experiences are not considered evidence of scholarly work. 

A3:   Approved to teach and serve on master’s, specialist, and doctoral degree committees

  • Must demonstrate current, consistent, and active engagement in quality research, creative, or clinical activity appropriate to the department or student(s) being served.  Professional experiences are not considered evidence of scholarly work. 

A4:  Approved to teach and chair master’s, specialist, and doctoral (projects only) degree committees

  • Must be a full time, non-tenure track teaching or clinical faculty member at The University of Southern Mississippi.
  • Must have completed an earned doctorate/terminal degree or its equivalent.
  • Must demonstrate current, consistent, and active research or relevant clinical activity appropriate to the individual’s department.

All applicants must provide evidence that the application meets the expectations described above and complete Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training.
