The University of Southern Mississippi will celebrate Earth Week 2014 with a full schedule of activities set for April 21-25 on the Hattiesburg campus.

Chief among those will be a ceremony to announce a Tree Campus USA designation by the Arbor Foundation. A special ceremony will be held on Earth Day -- Tuesday, April 22 -- at 8 a.m. on the brick pathway of West Memorial Plaza, just south of Forrest County Hall.

The Tree Campus USA program is the product of a joint partnership between the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota North America, Inc. Universities and colleges whose leaders embrace tree conservation and engage students, faculty and staff in that same endeavor are eligible for the recognition. Colleges and universities meet five standards developed to promote healthy trees and student involvement.

Other notable events from Earth Week at Southern Miss include:

• Tuesday, April 22, 6:30-7:30 p.m. – Honors Forum Lecture: Appalachian folklorist Byron Ballard; Thad Cochran Center ballroom

• Wednesday, April 23, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. – Earth Fair and Alternative Car Show; Shoemaker Square

• Thursday, April 24, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. – City of Hattiesburg Earth Fair; Southern Miss Office of Sustainability will host a booth
