Point Cadet Teaching Site
The Point Cadet Teaching Site in Biloxi, Mississippi, is home to the R/V Jim Franks, a 60-foot aluminum catamaran that carries a crew of three and a maximum of 40 passengers. This vessel is a unit of the university’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory and is primarily used for class field trips to and from the Mississippi Barrier Islands as well as a research platform for in-house and external research excursions.
Also docked at the Point Cadet Marina is the R/V Hermes, a 38-foot steel trawler that has long been a part of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory's educational programs. Christened in 1955, the Hermes is U.S. Coast Guard approved to transport two crew and up to 20 passengers on field excursions for students and in-house research projects.
