Requirements and Advising
At the University of Southern Mississippi, students in the History BA program, in addition to completing the University and College Core and the general degree requirements, are required to complete, with the grade of C or better in each class, the World Civilizations sequence (HIS 101 and HIS 102), the American History survey sequence (HIS 201 and HIS 202), Historical Methods (HIS 300), eighteen (18) credit hours in upper division history classes (300/400 level), and the Senior History Capstone Seminar (HIS 400). This may differ depending on the student's catalog year and changing requirements. For additional information, see the Undergraduate Bulletin. For the History BA advising check list, click here.
All undergraduate majors in history must be advised every semester. Advisement ensures that students will receive their degrees in a timely fashion. In October and March of each year, an advisement week is designated by the university and majors should sign up for an appointment with a history advisor in the department office. To set up an appointment, stop by the history office or contact them at (601) 266-4333.
Students who wish to minor in history must take the World Civilizations sequence (HIS 101 and HIS 102) and an additional fifteen (15) credit hours, at any level, of history classes. History minors are encouraged, though not required, to take Historical Methods (HIS 300) as one of their additional classes. This may differ depending on the student's catalog year and changing requirements. For additional information, see the Undergraduate Bulletin.
