Professor Emeritus

Dr. Ken McCarty's major publications include Hattiesburg: A Pictorial History and articles in various journals. For years, Dr. McCarty served as the editor of the Journal of Mississippi History.  In 2003-2004, Professor McCarty served as president of the Mississippi Historical Society and in 2013 he was awarded the society's Dunbar Rowland Award for his lifelong contributions to the preservation, study, and interpretation of Mississippi history.

Dr. McCarty was a distinguished instructor of classes on Mississippi History and U.S.–East Asian relations.  He was also instrumental in the department's teacher preparation program.  In 2015, Dr. McCarty's family and friends set up a scholarship in his name to assist students in the department's Social Studies Licensure program.
