Women's and Gender Studies - Graduate Minor

The graduate minor in Women’s and Gender Studies is designed to develop the student’s proficiency in a variety of feminist theories and research methodologies at an advanced level. The courses approved for the minor must be listed on the student's official Plan of Study. Since new courses may become available for Women’s and Gender Studies credit in any given semester, the candidate should be advised by the Director of Women’s and Gender Students as well as by the candidate’s major professor.



  • — Master’s-level minor: Minimum 9 hours of approved coursework
  • — Doctoral minor: Minimum of 12 hours of approved coursework



Required Course:

  • WGS 601: Theories and Methods in Women’s Studies  -- or Director of Women’s and Gender Studies approval of previous coursework in Women’s and Gender Studies as an equivalent to WGS 601

Elective Courses (Remaining hours from approved courses numbered 500 or above and distributed across at least 2 disciplines in addition to WGS):

  • ANT 552: Language, Gender and Culture
  • CJ 563 / WGS 527: Family Law
  • CJ 564 / WGS 528: Family Violence, Investigation and Deterrence
  • ENG 568 / WGS 503: British Women Writers
  • ENG 578: American Women Writers
  • ENG 678 / WGS 602: Topics in Writing by Women
  • HIS 577 / WGS 510: Women in American Society
  • PS 505 / WGS 520: Women and Politics
  • SOC 515 / WGS 525: Sociology of Gender
  • WGS 692: Special Problems in Women’s and Gender Studies


GPA: Minimum 3.0 GPA in all courses counting toward the minor
