Ellen Weinauer

Director of Interdisciplinary Studies, Associate Professor of English

Ellen Weinauer joined the faculty of the Department of English at USM in 1994. Since that time, she has filled a variety of administrative positions, including the Director of Graduate Studies in English and the Director of Women's and Gender Studies. Weinauer became the director of Interdisciplinary Studies in August of 2012. A two-time winner of the University Excellence in Teaching Award, Weinauer teaches courses at all levels, from first-year classes to graduate seminars, in a wide range of topics—interdisciplinary studies, American literature, and women's studies.

Weinauer's interdisciplinary scholarship integrates a variety of fields, from literature and law to history and race and gender studies. She has published widely on such American writers as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Frederick Douglass, and she is the co-editor, with Robert McClure Smith, of American Culture, Canons, and the Case of Elizabeth Stoddard, a collection of essays on a significant, but understudied, woman writer.
