Graduate Assistantships

At present, the university has approximately 900 university assistantships in all areas. Stipend amounts for assistantships vary from program to program and interested applicants should contact the specific program or office for information regarding stipend levels available. In addition to academic programs, graduate service assistantships are available in other areas including but not limited to Alumni Association, Athletics, Career Services, Center for Community & Civic Engagement, Financial Aid, Human Resources, Institutional Effectiveness, McNair Scholars Program, Moffett Health Clinic, Recreational Sports, and the USM Foundation.

To maintain an assistantship a student must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.  General tuition and the non-resident fee are waived for graduate assistantship holders. To qualify for this waiver, students on assistantships must be registered for courses totaling nine (9) hours during a fall/spring semester (three hours during the summer term). Courses taken as audit do not count toward these hours. Inquiries regarding assistantships should be directed to the school director of the program to which the student is applying and assistantship applications must be filed by the program’s deadline. Check with the graduate director for deadlines and additional materials.

Scholarships

The USM Foundation awards a variety of scholarships for eligible students through the Golden Opportunity Scholarship and Competitive Program Application System. By completing one application, students are reviewed for any scholarship for which they are eligible. You must complete a new application each academic year.

Graduate STEM Opportunities

Students in the STEM fields should check out potential opportunities available from the federal government by visiting The Gateway to Federal Opportunities.

Financial Aid

Applicants should contact Financial Aid at financial.aid@usm.edu regarding aid available to graduate students.
