inSync is a program that will automatically backup the files on your university-owned computer to the USM network while your computer is turned on and has an internet connection.
A backup is performed every four hours and backups are retained for 30 days.
The system is setup to automatically backup key folders on your systems including Desktop, Favorites, Documents, Office Settings, and any locally stored Outlook email.
If you have folders in other locations on your computer that you would like backed up, you can select Add from the Summary section of the program.
This will open a box allowing you to choose the folder to add to backups.
Once the folder has been added, you will see it under your Summary section. Additional
settings can be configured by selecting the gear next to the folder if desired.
After opening the inSync client, you can see the backup status on the Summary page.
The Restore Files, button opens the Restore Files area.
Under Devices you will see each machine registered for backups associated with your user account. You can select any device from which to restore from.
Under Snapshots, the dates and times the device was backed up are shown. You can select the date you want to restore or find a file from.
You can then select the folder links to navigate to the file or folder you want to
Once the file is found, you can select followed by Restore.
You can then select where and how you want to restore the file.
We recommended selecting Restore to Desktop so it is easy to find the file you restored.
A folder will be created on your desktop with today's date. Your restored files will be inside this newly created folder.
If you choose Original Location the message will appear about overwriting existing file/s as shown below. Choose
either Yes or No.
Look for the yellow bar on top and green bar at the bottom for All Restores Completed successfully.
You can login to inSync and access your files from the web using the following URL: https://insync.usm.edu
Note: To access this site from off campus, you will need to be connected to the University VPN.
Login to the web site using your full university email address and CampusID password.
The web interface closely resembles that of the program on your computer.
From here, you can choose a device, a snapshot, and find the folder or files you want to restore.
To download an entire folder, you can select the next to the folder and choose Download.
Once a file or folder has been selected to download, you will see the familiar download
dialog boxes associated with your browser.
