Podcasting with SLIS

We're podcasting! About books. About how books shape our world. About the ways we as readers, authors, and library and information science professionals interpret the world.  Oh, and lots of other random things as well.

The podcasts are presented by the University of Southern Mississippi School of Library and Information Science. As a listener, you can look forward to a variety of podcast formats about a wide range of subjects relating to books, the authors that write them, the libraries in which they are housed, and the professionals that manage their care. We endeavor to record bi-monthly episodes that are produced with the help of faculty, staff, graduate assistants, and students at USM.

Without any further ado...

Episode 1

The Mystery of Nonfiction: Candance Fleming and Eric Rohmann on Giant Squid

In our introductory episode, we talk with illustrator, Eric Rohmann, and writer, Candance Fleming. The two have worked on several children’s books together, including familiar titles such as Oh, No!Bone Dog, and Bulldozer’s Big Day. Their latest nonfiction collaboration, Giant Squid, focuses on the elusive cephalopod in a poetic voice that will linger long after it slides off of the page. This interview looks specifically at the scientific conundrum that envelops the sea creature, leaving many of its biological secrets in a dark cloud of ink.

Episode 2

Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief and the Dallas Public Library

In episode 2 we speak with Colleen E. Smith, a Southern Miss SLIS alum and now Library Branch Manager at Lochwood Branch Library in Dallas, Texas. Dallas has opened shelters for those suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and Colleen is collecting books and games to create a mini-library at the shelter in the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. At the time of this podcast's recording, we were not yet aware of Hurricane's Irma's potential. Please visit the Florida Library Association's page if you'd like to contribute to the Florida Libraries Disaster Relief Fund
