Graduate Program

The Department of Mathematics offers the following graduate degrees.


Available Research Areas

MS Thesis and Ph.D. dissertations are written under the direction of a faculty member in the faculty member’s area of expertise.



Teaching assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis at the following rates.

  • $10,500/9 months for MS students.

  • $11,750/9 months for Ph.D. students after completion of the MS.

  • $13,000/9 months for Ph.D. students who have completed their comprehensive exams.

Each teaching assistantship comes with a waiver of in-state and out-of-state tuition for up to 13 graduate hours per semester. Responsibilities include teaching classes and tutoring.


Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics or a related field that satisfies the mathematics requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics at Southern Miss.

  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.75 for regular admission to the MS program.

  • GRE scores of at least 150 in the verbal category and in the quantitative category.

  • A subject GRE is not required.

  • For applicants whose native language is not English, a TOEFL score of at least 580 (TOEFL PBT), or 237 (TOEFL CBT), or 92 (TOEFL iBT), or a 6.5 on the IELTS.

  • At least 3 letters of recommendation.
