USM to Offer Special Tuition Program for Mississippi National Guard Members

The University of Southern Mississippi and the Mississippi National Guard signed a memorandum of understanding establishing an exciting new program that eliminates tuition expenses for Mississippi National Guard Service Members.

During a ceremony Wednesday at the USM Alumni Association Ogletree House, President Rodney Bennett and Major General Janson Boyles signed a memorandum of agreement establishing new tuition program for Mississippi National Guard Members enrolled at USM on a full-time basis.  This opportunity, referred to as the “Golden Eagle Free Tuition Program,” creates a unique option for eligible Mississippi Air and Army National Guard Service Members to earn a college degree from USM thus allowing them to advance their future career aspirations.

According to Jeff Hammond, Director of the USM Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families, “We are grateful to the Mississippi National Guard for their willingness to endorse and promote USM to their Service Members as a top academic institutions of choice.  The “Golden Eagle Free Tuition Program” reinforces the Southern Miss commitment to serving those who serve (or have served) and further bolsters the university position as the leading “Military Friendly” academic institution across the State of Mississippi.  We are eager to welcome our Mississippi National Guard Service Members to the friendly confines of our campus sites located in Hattiesburg and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Long Beach.”

Michael McGee, Outreach Coordinator for the USM Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families offered his reflections, “We believe the committed service and individual sacrifice of our Mississippi National Guard Members merit the opportunity for USM to support their Higher Education ambitions.  These men and women who honorably serve the State of Mississippi and our Nation are caring civil servants; people of impeccable character blessed with loyalty, determination and courage.”

In partnership with USM, the Mississippi National Guard “Golden Eagle Free Tuition Program” provides an exclusive benefit to Soldiers and Airmen resulting in an increase to National Guard membership, higher retention rates across the force and increasing the National Guard student enrollment/academic opportunity at USM.  The “Golden Eagle Free Tuition Program” includes Mississippi Air National Guard members who receive MSNG-State Educational Assistance Program (SEAP) assistance and are full-time undergraduate students, or Mississippi Army National Guard members who receive Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) funds.  To be eligible for the “Golden Eagle Free Tuition Program,” Mississippi National Guard Service Members must be full-time undergraduate students, in good standing with their unit and cannot be within a year of their expiration of term of service.  Interested National Guard Members should contact the USM Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families to learn more about this program and how to apply.
