Major General Jeff Hammond (Army-Ret)Maj. Gen. (Retired) Jeff Hammond

Maj. Gen. (Retired) Jeff Hammond is a father first, once a soldier and always a grateful and proud University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagle. He received his commission as an Army Officer upon graduation from The University of Southern Mississippi in 1978. During his years at USM he was a member of the football team where he played quarterback and served as team captain his senior year.
He began his military career immediately following graduation, and throughout the years led soldiers and families through some challenging circumstances. His service included command positions as a Battery, Battalion, and Brigade Commander, and as Commanding General, 4th Infantry Division, where he deployed his soldiers to Iraq starting in December 2007 to serve as Commanding General, Multi-National Division Baghdad in support of the War on Terror. 

Over the years he deployed on four different occasions, three of which involved combat operations and one involving enforcement of the Dayton Peace Accord. His staff experience range from the Army Director of Operations, Readiness and Mobilization in the Pentagon to include duty with the Pentagon Joint Staff, and the Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps, Germany.
Following 32 years of proud service to our nation, Jeff and Diane returned to Hattiesburg and Southern Miss, where he served the Athletics Department in fundraising and as Director of Athletics for 18 months.  He currently serves as a Special Assistant to the University of Southern Mississippi President for Military & Veterans Student Affairs.
Jeff earned a BS and MeD in Special Education while attending The University of Southern Mississippi, along with a Master's Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, which he received during his years on active duty as a soldier. Throughout his career he attended numerous military schools, ultimately graduating from The Army War College in 1998.
He is a member of the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni, Army ROTC and Sports Halls of Fame.  His military decorations include two awards of the Distinguished Service Medal, three awards of the Bronze Star Medal and two awards of the Combat Action Badge.
Jeff has been married to Diane (a USM Criminal Justice graduate) for 28 years, and they have two children, Michael and Meagan (both Texas A&M Aggies).
