Audition Information

Undergraduate degrees (BM and BME)Your audition should consist of the following:

  • Major Scales
  • Chromatic Scales
  • Sigmund Herring Etude no. 36
  • Solo from the following list: Ropartz – Andante et Allegro, Balay – Petite Piece Concertante, Goedicke – Concert Etude, or Balay – Andante et Allegro (Other works are acceptable, but must be approved.)
  • Sight Reading

Graduate Degrees (MM, MME, DMA)

  • Major and Minor Scales
  • Chromatic Scale
  • Charlier Etude No. 4
  • Three solos from the following list: Honegger – Intrada, Enesco – Legend, Halsey Stevens – Sonata, Mvt. 1, Tomasi – Concerto, Arutunian – Concerto, Brandt – Concertpiece No. 1, Böhme – Concerto (other representative solos are permissible, but consult with Dr. Bergman before the audition)
  • All orchestral excerpts from the following list: Beethoven – Mussorgsky – Pictures at an Exhibition (Promenade), Respighi – Pines of Rome (off-stage solo), Petroucka – Ballerina’s Dance
  • Sight Reading

In addition, a DMA audition should consist of the following:

Prepare a standard concerto or sonata from each of the following time periods:

  • Baroque (Mozart, Telemann, Hertel, Tartini)
  • Classical (Haydn, Hummel, Neruda)
  • Romantic (Böhme)
  • 20th Century (Tomasi, Jolivet, Chaynes)
  • 5-10 Standard Orchestral excerpts
