In addition to the MAJOR ENSEMBLES offered by Choral Activities, students at The University of Southern Mississippi have the opportunity to be involved in the Southern Opera and Musical Theater Company.
Opera and Musical Theatre have a rich and varied history at the University of Southern Mississippi. With productions such as Carmen, La Traviata, La Boheme, Le Nozze di Figaro, and I Pagliacci, performed in their original language, singers are challenged to excel in all areas of their singing and acting. In addition, Southern Opera and Musical Theatre is committed to producing the highest quality musical theatre shows that give our students a “real world” experience with production and performing.
With two main stage productions per year, one operatic and one musical, an active opera workshop training class and an exceptional children’s outreach program, Southern Miss students are engaged in active learning through performance experience.
Opera America in its summer 2009 issue featured Southern Opera and Musical Theatre, praising the program for its successful collaborations with Mississippi Opera. In addition, Southern Miss has played host to such notable vocal superstars as Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, William Warfield, Denyce Graves, Roberta Peters, Patti Labelle and Sandi Patty allowing our students to observe first-hand their exceptional professionalism, musicianship and stage demeanor that will be crucial for a successful performing career in singing.
The Southern Opera and Musical Theatre experience for our students is extraordinary.
