The DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi is accepting applications for its unique out-client Language Enhancement and Achievement Program (LEAP).

The service, limited to the first 15 applicants, is delivered in skill-based modules to groups of three or four students who will participate in three one-hour sessions per week.

“LEAP allows us to reach additional students with challenges in reading, reading fluency and comprehension, said DuBard School Director Dr. Maureen Martin. “With research indicating that 20 percent of the population has dyslexia, we must continue to seek ways of providing support to those who need it. Their success is a great reward.”

The after-school program is designed specifically for children who:

  • Have difficulty rhyming, sounding out words, blending sounds into words, spelling or reading
  • May or may not have a diagnosis of dyslexia or specific learning disability in reading
  • Have average speech and oral language skills

Martin points out that smaller group sessions allow more individualized instruction from certified speech-language pathologists and paraprofessionals while also keeping costs lower than one-on-one therapy.

The registration deadline is Dec. 1. For more information about LEAP and the DuBard School call 601-266-5223.
