Busy is the ideal catchword to describe the agenda within the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi over the next couple of weeks.

The frenzy begins with the inaugural Business Week Lecture Series set for Oct. 26-28. The lineup for that group of presentations includes the following:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 26, Noon-1 p.m., room 115 of Joseph Greene Hall – Sarah Asmus, of the Godwin Group will present, “Social Media: Not with a Bang, but an *Enter*”
  • Wednesday, Oct. 27, Noon-1 p.m., room 114 of Joseph Greene Hall – Meet the Dean. A meet-and-greet with Dean Lance Nail and members of his staff
  • Thursday, Oct. 28, Noon-1 p.m., room 115 of Joseph Greene Hall – Rod Karns of Stryker Medical will present, “Changes in Healthcare Today.”

“This week was created to give the College of Business a public forum with our students and alumni,” said J.T. Tisdale, director of external relations for the College of Business. “It is sometimes hard to show what business education is supposed to look like, so this gives us an opportunity to publicly showcase business … across the board.”

The jam-packed schedule continues on Thursday with the Healthcare Marketing Industry Day, set for 9 a.m.-noon on the first floor of Joseph Greene Hall. The event provides an opportunity for students to meet with recruiters to discuss career options in the pharmaceutical and medical fields.

Dr. Mike Wittmann, associate professor of marketing at Southern Miss, noted that several high-profile companies have already committed to attend including: Eli Lilly, Pamlab LLC, Pfizer, Medtronic, Stryker, Ethicon Endo Surgery and Benco Dental.

On Thursday evening, longtime Harrah's Entertainment executive Carlos Tolosa will address residents of the Business Honors House at 6 p.m. Tolosa will be honored the following day, Oct. 29, as the College of Business Alumnus of the Year at noon in the south end zone of M.M. Roberts Stadium. Harrah's Entertainment CEO Gary Loveman is scheduled to present Tolosa with the prestigious award.

On Nov. 4, Angela Brav, COO of InterContinental Hotels Group, will be on hand to meet students and answer questions from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in room 218 of the Thad Cochran Center.

“We want to start doing something like this every semester,” said Tisdale. “There is a lot of potential to really make these weeks special and a lot of relevant topics that we can highlight.”
