The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) through the Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach is offering an online Sports Security Management Certificate. The program will be offered beginning Sept. 13 through Nov. 22.

The Sports Security Management Professional Certificate Program provides effective management planning, prevention, response and recovery standards and procedures in sports security. This comprehensive program uses techniques that fulfill the standards and procedures of the National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) set forth by the Department of Homeland Security.

“At the completion of this program, current and future sports and entertainment professionals will be provided with the specialized capabilities and knowledge needed to meet the management challenges of homeland defense and security in a sports environment,” said Dr. Stacey Hall, program director and assistant professor in the School of Human Performance and Recreation at Southern Miss.

Individuals who will benefit from this program include emergency management agency personnel, emergency medical service personnel, law enforcement officers, public safety communicators, recreation facility managers and operations staff and security professionals.

“The course concept and material were great and very informative. Every time I e-mailed the instructor the reply was prompt,” said Drew Pittman, a certificate recipient and director of facilities for Baylor University Athletics. “I have been considering the sports management degree from USM with a concentration in sport security because I liked the concept and materials so much.”

Topics to be covered within the program are examination of the basic legislation and operations of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, nature and scope of sports security issues involved in securing domestic and international threats at sporting events, natural disasters and crowd management issues in sports, overviews of terrorism, homeland security and risk assessment methodologies applicable to sports venues, mitigation and preparedness strategies.
