Southern Miss Biological Sciences Hosting Outreach Activities This Semester

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Biological Sciences will host outreach activities this fall, including unique “overnight adventures” at its popular science museum that include opportunities to learn about the natural world on campus and at a nature preserve managed by the university.

The schedule includes the following events:

* Friday, Sept. 17: The Biological Sciences Learning Center (BSLC), located in the basement of Mississippi Hall, will be open to the public from 4-7 p.m. prior to the Southern Miss vs. University of Kansas football game. Admission is free.

* Beginning Saturday-Sunday Sept. 18-19  “Night at the Museum,” a monthly overnight retreat for students in grades 4-8, offers the opportunity to learn about native Mississippi nightlife, see animals and learn about topics related to a nocturnal environment. This weekend's retreat topic will be entomology (the study of insects) and participants should bring an insect net, field guide, forceps, collecting jars. A camera is optional.

Participants should pack a sleeping bag, pillow, toothbrush, toothpaste, change of clothes, water bottle, snacks, flashlight or headlamp. Belongings should be labeled and limited to one bag. Snacks and breakfast will be provided.

Registration cost is $25 and space is limited. Parents and guardians should plan to drop off your child at the BSLC between 6 - 6:30 p.m. Activities begin at 6:30 p.m. and continue until 8:00 a.m. the next morning.  Participants should be picked up between 8- 8:30 a.m.

* Saturday, Oct. 2: Discover Nature Series at Lake Thoreau 8 - 11 a.m. Topic: “Let's Go Birding Mississippi!” featuring expert Dr. Jodie Jawor, assistant professor of biological sciences at Southern Miss. This program is for beginning to experienced birders age 15 and above. Participants should supply their own binoculars and bird field guide.
