Political Science Professor Named Fellow at Brookings Institution
LONG BEACH, Miss.– Dr. Edward Sayre, associate professor of political science, international development and international affairs at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, has been appointed as a Fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization based in Washington, D.C.
As a Fellow, Sayre will work with the Middle East Youth Initiative (MEYI) at the Wolfensohn Center for Development. He will develop a new research agenda for MEYI and work with their network of scholars and partnering institutions on its implementation. Additionally, Sayre will conduct independent research, publish and provide substantive reviews of work to be published by MEYI.
Sayre has recently examined economic aspects of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. An opinion-editorial piece by Sayre, coauthored with MEYI associate director Samantha Constant on the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, has been published by The Guardian in the United Kingdom.
Southern Miss Gulf Coast Communications Office Wins Three Regional Awards
LONG BEACH, Miss. – The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Office of University Communications received three professional awards at the 2010 Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF) Awards Banquet in Baton Rouge, La.
The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Office of University Communications includes Charmaine Schmermund, public relations associate, and Francesca Linthicum, graphic designer and communication specialist.
In the images category, Schmermund received a Lantern Award for the entry “Technology Learning Center Ribbon Cutting Reception Photo.” Schmermund also received the Award of Merit in the category of public relations news release for the entry, “Southern Miss Student Battles Cancer, Pursues Degree.”
A second Lantern Award was received by Linthicum in the potpourri category for the “Southern Miss Gulf Coast Holiday Greeting Card” entry.
The SPRF Lantern Award is the organization's top award in each category. It is given to exceptional work in its field and surpasses all other entries within that category. The Award of Merit recognizes notable work in the field of public relations.
Lansford, Covarrubias Co-Author Book on Community Resilience Following Hurricane Katrina
LONG BEACH, Miss.– Dr. Tom Lansford, academic dean and professor of political science at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, and Jack Covarrubias, assistant professor of political science at Southern Miss Gulf Coast, have partnered with two additional co-authors on the book, Fostering Community Resilience: Homeland Security and Hurricane Katrina.
Printed by Ashgate Publishing, the book uses the Mississippi Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina as a case study to understand the concept of resilience and how it applies to homeland security. By studying the coast's recovery, scholars and policymakers can better understand community resilience, not only as a concept, but also as a practice.
A review of the publication, provided by U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, states,“Valuable lessons were learned from our devastating experience that can be used to make homes, communities and states more resilient in the face of future catastrophes.”
