Southern Miss Hosting American Society of Microbiology Event Oct. 29-30

Some of the top scientists in our region will converge on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus Oct. 29-30 for the annual meeting of the South Central Branch of the American Society for Microbiology (SCB-ASM).
The two-day event will bring together more than 100 microbiologists from Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana for a series of presentations and discussions about such topics as medical microbiology, immunology, environmental microbiology as well as for a special symposium on tick-borne diseases.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Andrew Darwin of the New York University School of Medicine, a recognized expert in infectious diseases.
“The fact we are hosting this conference shows Southern Miss is a premier research institution playing an important role in scientific research. It's also a great opportunity for us to showcase our facilities and our commitment to research,” said Dr. Mohamed Elasri, associate professor of biological sciences and president of the SCB-ASM.
Southern Miss graduate students will also compete for awards for presentations and research posters, providing them with important experience and training in scientific presentations.
