Thanks to a brand new “smartphone” and mobile device application, students, alumni and everyone else now have a quick and easy way to stay connected with Southern Miss.

The newly launched mobile app - iSouthernMS – allows the Southern Miss community to stay connected by providing hand-held access to campus maps, current class schedules and event calendars, plus the latest university news, sports schedules and more.

“We want to offer our students and other members of our community the best in technology and access, and that means making Southern Miss services and information available to mobile users,” explained Homer Coffman, Southern Miss chief information officer. “We expect iSouthernMS to be popular with current and prospective students, parents, alumni and other members of the university community.”

Presently available only for the Apple iPhone, iPad, and iTouch devices,iSouthernMS can be downloaded through iTunes, appstoreHQ and other on-line app stores. It was developed by Blackboard Mobile, a division of education technology company Blackboard Inc.

iSouthernMS is a big part of how I navigate campus and my own experience at Southern Miss” said Mary Lois Hanna, junior communication studies major. “My campus experience – from classes to sporting events to maps – is now with me wherever I go. Whether I need directions, game times, search classes, or the latest university news, now I have an app for that.”

According to Coffman, the technology partnership with Blackboard is an exciting one because as an education technology company, it understands the possibilities for mobile applications in education.
