DuBard School to Host Missing Links in Academics Seminar April 7-8

Teachers and other speech professionals can gain valuable insight into multisensory teaching techniques by attending the Missing Links in Academics Seminar April 7-8 at the DuBard School for Language Disorders on The University of Southern Mississippi campus.
The seminar is designed for second through eighth-grade general and special education teachers, reading specialists, speech-language pathologists and parents with the goal of helping them gain knowledge about the National Reading Panel's five areas of reading along with other skills needed to build reading fluency.
Areas of emphasis and discussion will include:
- Syllable types and syllable division rules
- Use morphemes as a way of increasing comprehension
- Ways of building reading fluency
- Methods of teaching comprehension strategies
“The Missing Links in Academics seminar provides comprehension syllable instruction that will challenge students and engage them in learning skills for reading improvement,” said Carolyn Felsher, speech-language pathologist in Hattiesburg, Miss. “The practice examples are valuable learning tools and they are easy to incorporate in lesson plans.”
Additional seminar topics will include characteristics of language disorders, sound-syllable association, spelling analysis of prefixes and suffixes, vocabulary and comprehension and instruction, semantics, syntax and graphic organizers.
“The seminar expanded my understanding of how words are broken down giving me a more confident and knowledgeable approach to helping my son with his spelling words and how to break down words while reading them,” said Carmon Dow, a parent from Picayune, Miss.
Regular registration is available for $250 until March 28. After that date, the registration fee will increase to $275. On-site registration will be taken as space allows. The registration fee includes lunch.
The seminar is approved for 1.2 continuing education units for educators and speech-language pathologists.
