Students and teachers representing 16 high schools from the southern region of the state will converge on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus Dec. 2-3 for the South Mississippi High School Drama Festival.

The participants will perform plays ranging from Luigi Pirandello's “Six Characters in Search of an Author,” a play that presents Pirandello's views about the isolation of the individual from society and from himself, to “Be Careful What You Ask For,” a romantic comedy of wishes gone amiss.

“This is going to be a great opportunity for these schools to showcase the depth of talent that we have in South Mississippi,” said Tom Hardy, festival director

The drama festival will serve as a prequalifying event for the Mississippi Theatre Association Statewide Theatre Festival scheduled for Jan. 12-15, 2012, to advance to the statewide festival.

The general public is welcome to attend the festival as observers. The registration fee is $8 at the door. Observers will be accepted as space permits.

The South Mississippi High School Drama Festival is a collaboration between the Southern Miss Department of Theatre and Dance, Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach and the Mississippi Theatre Association.
