Hildman Colloquium to feature Noted Expert on Emotional Disorders

Dr. David Barlow, a widely published and highly regarded expert on emotional disorders and clinical research methodology, will be the featured speaker for The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Psychology's annual Hildman Colloquium at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, in the Thad Cochran Center, Ballroom II.
Dr. Barlow, who is the founder and director emeritus of Boston University's Center for Anxiety Disorders, will present “Science and Practice in 2010 and Beyond.” His presentation will focus on the integration of science into practice in psychology; the emergence of evidence-based practice; an examination of current barriers to dissemination and implementation and how these public health policy issues will impact research and practice in this decade.
"Very few psychologists in the field have had the impact on practice as has Dr. Barlow,” said Dr. Joe Olmi, chairman of the Southern Miss Department of Psychology. “He is a distinguished scientist and scholar who holds virtually every credential and won virtually every significant award in the field.”
Dr. Barlow is the author of more than 500 articles and chapters, including more than 60 books and clinical manuals. He is a former professor of psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and professor of psychiatry and psychology at Brown Universityand founded clinical psychology internships in both settings. He was also Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University at Albany, State University of New York.
He is the recipient of the 2000 American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology. He is also the recipient of the first Science Dissemination Award from the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology of the APA; and recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the Society of Clinical Psychology of the APA.
Dr. Barlow's other honors include Career Contribution Awards from the Massachusetts, California, and Connecticut Psychological Associations; The 2004 C. Charles Burlingame Award from the Institute of Living in Hartford, Conn.; The First Graduate Alumni Scholar Award from the Graduate College, The University of Vermont; The Masters and Johnson Award, from the Society for Sex Therapy and Research; G. Stanley Hall Lectureship, American Psychological Association; and the RIT award from the National Institute of Mental Healthfor long term contributions to the clinical research effort.
He is a past president of the Division of Clinical Psychologyof the American Psychological Association and the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy; past associate editor of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, past editor of the journals Behavior Therapy and Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, and Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice, and is currently editor in chief of the "Treatments that Work" series for Oxford University Press.
Dr. Barlow was also chairman of the American Psychological Association Task Force of Psychological Intervention Guidelines; was a member of the DSM-IV Task Force of the American Psychiatric Association; co-chair of the Work Group for revising the anxiety disorder categories; and is a Diplomat in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He maintains a private practice.
