The University of Southern Mississippi Police Department reports that on Friday, March 18 at approximately 9:50 a.m., a man entered Cook Library on the Hattiesburg campus and stole a laptop computer from a student study area.

Based on these photos taken by a security camera and provided by University Police, the suspect in the case is a slender-built black male with a dark complexion, who at the time of the incident was wearing a white t-shirt, long white shorts and white shoes.  A follow-up investigation has led UPD to believe this suspect is involved in similar incidents which have occurred at Johnson Science Tower, Southern Hall and the Bobby Chain Technology Building.

Anyone with information that could help in resolving this case is asked to call University Police Crime Stoppers at 601.266.4986. A reward may be available for information that leads to an arrest of the suspect.

University Police recommends that students, faculty and staff take the following precautions to prevent theft of their own or university property:

  • Secure your belongings such as laptop computers, purses and wallets; do not leave them unattended.
  • Lock your office whenever you leave and remove any personal property from plain view such as purses, computers, money, etc. Secure such items in a locked desk or filing cabinet.
  • If you see a suspicious person on campus report them to the University Police Department at 601.266.4986.
