Public Health Forum Focuses on Reasonable, Affordable Reform Options

Affordable health care and acceptable reform alternatives will be the focus of a public health forum set for 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24 at the Thad Cochran Center on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi.
Sponsored by the College of Health at Southern Miss, the free forum will include a panel of speakers who will provide a non-partisan discussion of the current state of health care reform, the impact that it has on local and national levels and a glimpse into the future of reform.
“Literally everyone has a stake in the future of health care and our health care system,” said Dr. Mike Forster, dean of the College of Health at Southern Miss. “These forums provide – at no charge – accessible opportunities for people to hear from and dialog with Mississippi experts on cutting-edge health issues.”
Ed Tucker, a visiting professor in the College of Health, is one of the featured speakers in the forum titled, “Perspective on Health Care Reform – Which Way Forward?” Tucker notes that health insurance reform affects every individual, business, state and local government and all tax returns.
“It increases the power of the IRS and the federal health authorities while also intending to expand health coverage,” said Tucker. “Whether you or for it, or against it, you need to understand health insurance reform.”
