In response to the current economy and high unemployment rates, The University of Southern Mississippi Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach is hosting two information sessions at noon and 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the WIN Job Center at 1911 Arcadia St. in Hattiesburg.

The sessions are designed to provide the community with information on training the school offers in conjunction with Career Step, a leading online healthcare education company, for careers in the growing healthcare industry.

“These information sessions are designed to help people in our community discover growing career fields that they can train for quickly,” said Frederick Varnado, director of Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach at Southern Miss. “Healthcare is where the jobs are, and we can help students prepare for successful careers in medical transcription, medical coding and billing, or as pharmacy technicians or medical administrative assistants in less than a year.”

Within the healthcare industry, jobs in medical transcription, medical coding and billing, and for pharmacy technicians and medical administrative assistants are also increasing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the medical transcription field will experience 11 percent employment growth between 2008 and 2018 and that the medical coding and billing field will experience 20 percent employment growth during the same time period.

The number of jobs in the pharmacy technician and medical administrative assistant fields are expected to grow even more, with a 31 percent employment increase for pharmacy technicians and 27 percent employment growth for medical administrative assistants. The programs offered at Southern Miss provide those within the community the opportunity to quickly gain the education they need to qualify for these jobs.
